The Plastic Bank Project

What is Plastic Bank?

Plastic Bank is an innovative, school-based recycling initiative that transforms how communities manage plastic waste — by reimagining it through the familiar and engaging framework of a banking system. This brilliant initiative by BluPrint Communities, is the very first of its kind and presents an exciting new way in approaching plastic recycling.

In this programme, primary and junior high schools become “plastic banks”, where plastic waste becomes the currency of change. Students and schools deposit plastic waste, earn points based on the weight collected, and redeem rewards that enhance education, sustainability, and well-being.

The Plastic Bank instills environmental consciousness, promotes collective action, and nurtures a new generation of eco-leaders. It is low-cost, replicable, and unifying — a signature BluPrint Communities model that can thrive in any community.

How It Works

  • Schools Register to become Plastic Bank Partner Schools.
  • Plastic is Collected weekly by students and deposited in provided bins.
  • Waste is Weighed by BluPrint collectors, and schools earn Plastic Points based on the amount collected.
  • Points are Redeemed for rewards such as exercise books, classroom bins, excursions, and tech support.

Students form “Depositors Clubs” that help lead activities like peer education, cleanup days, and clean community ambassadorship.

Project Objectives

  • Combat plastic pollution through education and action
  • Promote student leadership and civic engagement
  • Enhance resource-limited schools with performance-based rewards
  • Foster a culture of sustainability in schools and communities

Pilot Phase Rollout

As part of our pilot phase rollout, BluPrint Communities has selected three basic schools in Tema (Greater Accra Region) to launch the initial implementation of our program. Each school will receive comprehensive support, including training for teacher coordinators, guidance on using tracking tools, a rewards catalog, and the establishment of student-led Depositors Clubs. Ahead of the official launch, a Pre-Launch Awareness & Orientation Day will be held to engage school clubs, coordinators, stakeholders, and partners. The program will officially launch in October 2025 with a joint event bringing together all pilot schools and full stakeholder representation. During the event, collection bins, tracking tools, school account numbers, and account cards will be distributed to formally kick off the initiative.
